Located in Orne, Domfront really captures what the more verdant side of Normandy has to offer. The town is set in the western part of the Parc Naturel Régional Normandie-Maine, a quiet unspoiled landscape of rolling hills, forests and streams with many other traditional settlements nearby.

Within the fortified walls of the town, the cobbled streets are lined with half-timbered houses and some grander townhouses, interspersed with busy cafés and open squares. Picturesque timber-framed or colombage houses are prevalent in the centre and reflect the medieval heritage of the region. Created with local materials, including wood and a wattle and daub technique, this style is often found incorporated into longères, farmhouses and outbuildings too.

While Normandy may not be renowned for its climate compared to the south of France, it certainly has a lot to offer buyers who are looking to generate a rental income. The region has many draws for holidaymakers: not only green tourism, with its regional parks and lush countryside, but also a number of popular landmarks. The UNESCO sites, including Mont-Saint-Michel and Bayeux, attract millions of worldwide visitors each year. The beaches of the D-Day landings are easy to get to too, as are other attractions on the coast for day trips.

Accessible by ferry or by air via Paris (less than a two-hour drive away), the region remains well connected for visitors coming from all directions. From Alençon, the capital of the département, there is even a TGV that goes all the way to Aix-en-Provence. Pricing in and around Domfront reflects one of the most attractive aspects of Normandy – that there is a wide range of properties to suit all budgets. A house with a gîte and a good amount of land can be found for less than €150,000, while those with grander tastes are spoilt for choice with country manor houses and equestrian properties at attractive prices.
