Situated in the south east of Charente, at the edge of the Parc Naturel Régional Périgord Limousin and bordering the Dordogne and Limousin regions, Montbron is a traditional bustling market town which has grown around the former castle and city ramparts. This is a choice area for buyers looking to achieve a balance between town and country living. The surrounding countryside is set in an idyllic part of France known as the Tardoire Valley which offers spectacular scenery and deep valley gorges interspersed with numerous market towns.

Country lovers will benefit from the range of outdoor activities which can be found on the doorstep from walking, horse riding or canoeing. There are also some superb golf courses in the area including an 18-hole course and short course. In contrast, the historic city of Angoulême is nearby and offers a full range of shops, services and notable restaurants. The city plays host to a number of festivals and events year-round, including the classic car rally, Circuit International des Ramparts, held on the streets of Angoulême in September.

Montbron is a fine example of a traditional town which has preserved its heritage, visible in its characterful houses and historic streets yet, with its range of modern amenities, also caters to current day-to-day needs. Market day on Saturday presents a hive of activity and is s much a reason to socialise and integrate with the local community as it is to shop for some of the region’s delicacies.

This is still a relatively unknown part of France and property here can represent very good value for money but, increasingly, British buyers are discovering the areas so our advice is to act quickly! Townhouses in the centre of Montbron requiring renovation and updating can be found for under €100,000. Grander Maison de Maître style properties often with b&b or gîtes can be found from upwards of €300,000. If you’re looking for a countryside setting within easy reach of Montbron, there are some excellent well-renovated barn conversions with land starting from €150,000.

The area is very accessible with Limoges and Poitiers airports both within easy reach of the town and providing regular flights to the UK. La Rochelle airport is a bit further away at just over two hours’ drive. The nearby towns of Poitiers and Angoulême are mainline TGV stops with links to Paris and Bordeaux.
