At first glance, the perched village of Flayosc appears to be extremely remote. For starters, there are hills, vineyards and olive groves as far as the eye can see. Then there’s the fact that no major road passes through, making life here a contained affair.

That being said, Flayosc isn’t quite as isolated as it seems. It’s a 15-minute drive (or €1 shuttlebus) from up-and-coming Draguignan, also known as the ‘Porte du Verdon’, and 35km from the Mediterranean coast. Glitzy Cannes is just an hour away by car. In short, it strikes the perfect balance between seclusion and accessibility.

Whether you’re venturing out in the surrounding Var département or further afield, Flayosc makes an excellent base for exploring the South East. But there’s plenty to keep you occupied in the village itself, from the Provençal Monday-morning market – selling fruit, vegetables, cheese, charcuterie and spices – to the sprawl of outdoor cafés in shaded squares for a spot of coffee and people-watching. The central church, Église Saint-Laurent, is also worth a visit, and if you’re taking a stroll there are numerous fountains to admire throughout the village, as well as your usual handful of boulangeries and pastry shops. There are also some less orthodox amenities… Doll hospital, anyone?

We’d summarise life here as quiet but vibrant, and that’s reflected in the type of properties available. Often brightly painted and sitting in the leafy outskirts with incredible views, villas are the increasingly popular option in this neck of the woods and can be relatively cheap. Although many fetch millions, you can find three-bedroom villas with a pool for as little as €350,000.

And yes, we know that a pool may seem superfluous for a house within driving distance of the beach, but roads to the coast can get chock-a-block in the height of summer. So your own pool gives you the chance to enjoy the balmy weather while avoiding les embouteillages (traffic jams).

Meanwhile, in the heart of Flayosc, clustered near the top of the hill in the vieux village, are modern, pastel-tinged apartments for a different perspective on this medieval marvel.
