What They Do and How to Find One

What does a notaire do?

Anyone buying in the Pays de la Loire will immediately come across the local notaire.

This is the person responsible for arranging the legal formalities of your property purchase or sale. They are also the person who will prepare your will, if you choose to do one in France.

But don’t think that they are the same as your local solicitor in the UK.

The French notary is essentially fulfilling a mechanical function, ensuring that property transfers comply with all due formalities, and – above all – that any relevant taxes are properly paid.

It is not their duty to warn either party of the transaction or risks they may be incurring, or ways of improving the deal to their advantage.
