If Nice, Monaco and Villfrance-sur-Mer were a sandwich ( gourmet, naturally), Villefranche in the middle would be the nutritious filling. From its beautiful harbour and beaches to its swanky seafood restaurants and backstreet bistros, its rainbow of houses in the old town to its ancient citadel, this radiant town is a treat for the senses. In fact, for all the glitz and glamour of its better-known neighbours, Villefranche offers a more authentic (and, some may argue, attractive) encounter with this famous stretch of southern coastline.

That said, it is still the French Riviera – so you should prepare to shell out a healthy sum. Entry-level villas can be listed anywhere from €1,500,000 and typically come with about four bedrooms. Many properties in this price bracket can be found in a prestigious gated estate just above the town, with amenities a short stroll away and beaches, restaurants and the harbour within a few kilometres – not to mention dreamy views over the Rade de Villefranche and Cap Ferrat.

For a striking six-bedroom Belle Epoque villa dating back to the 19th Century, you can expect to part with an eye-watering €8,000,000. A more modest apartment, on the other hand, will set you back €450,000 for a one-bedroom in a luxury residence, with harbour views from its terrace. A four-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment, with views from its pair of terraces and ample parking, can be snapped up for €750,000.

It goes without saying that you’re paying for the postcode in this millionaires’ playground, but don’t underestimate the quality of life here. There are numerous cafés du coin for that first coffee/croissant combo of the day, a bounty of Provençal rood markets (head to Promenade de l’Octroi first, thing on a Saturday – you’ll thank us later), and sublime seafood eateries, both Michelin-starred and otherwise. There are art galleries, museums and chic boutiques; history in spades along the subterranean rue Obscure and unrivalled vies of the port from the lofty citadel. No matter what you come for, the reasons to stay are manifold.
